Cipriani London, the Mayfair restaurant, will have to change its name after losing a trademark battle with the owners of the Hotel Cipriani in Venice. What a nightmare, to have to rebrand a restaurant from scratch.
This got me thinking: what new names would you give to famous restaurants and hotels?
The best suggestion wins a £25 book token.
The Cipriani could go down the route of Liberty, the runners up from Popstars who had to change their name after a High Court legal battle from an R&B band with the same name to Liberty X.
Not sure that Cipriani X would work with punters, but Liberty X (now split) still managed to change its name and go on to win a Brit Award!
If the creator of the Ritz Hotel had named it after his christian name rather than his surname, people would be going to The Cesar on Piccadilly for afternoon tea. And we'd have adopted the adjective, "Cesar-y", to describe a lavish place or event.
The Savoy Hotel was build on land owned by the House of Savoy, which was descended from Humbert, the Count of Sabaudia. I think Richard D'Oyly Carte, who built the hotel, was wise not to call it the Humbert ...
I cannot understand why the Cipriani family is losing sleep and court cases over it.
Dr. Arrigo Cipriani is better known (and respected) than the Orient Express minnows and I urge
him to rename the restaurant "Arrigo" or, if he has intentions of opening in other capita s, "Arrigo in London"
or a variation of it..
This will emphasize the importance of his name and will be sufficient to ensure continued patronage.

Thanks Nino. Arrigo in London sounds very distinguished!
