The School Food Trust was one of many bodies to suffer at the hands of the Government's quango cull this week.

However, it stated that it will continue as a charity and will also set up a complementary Community Interest Company by April 2011. The move should grant it greater commercial flexibility to support its work to increase the healthy school meal uptake in England.

What does this mean for children and the getting them to eat healthy school meals? Will this mean the end to the School Meals revolution?

I'm not sure that when I was at school we had the School Food Trust, and I'm not sure we needed it. Education about healthy eating starts at home, and as a result, I picked a well-balanced meal when I was sent to school. Our school kitchen's, which were all local authority run, offered a selection of food healthy and the ubiquitous chips and pizza, but to be honest this was less appetising than veg or curry or what ever the healthy option was. I think parents have to start taking a bit more responsibility for their kids diets again, and then there should be no need for the School Food Trust.
