Good service doesn’t need to be ‘fine dining’ only.  It means that the waiter or waitress is constantly alert to all the needs of the customer.  Good service involves been proud of your job. There are two main ingredients (in my opinion) to be a good waiter, the ability to do the job well (those can be thought) and the personality (some have it some don’t and those who don’t shouldn’t even be trying to do the job.

No one ever said this was an easy job, or a nine till five job… is a demanding job where the main skills would be - peripheral vision, being friendly but not intrusive, and Respect the customers.

I personally would like to have the ‘DREAM TEAM’ other than in my dreams… but daydreams aside, if we can’t get that dream team we just have to build it yourself… but I do wonder do great waiters still exist. Can we create a good waiter with hard work and very good training? Or is more about the ‘right personality’?  is that rare to find?

I Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

There is certainly an art to being a good waiter/waitress but generally you find today that waiters/waitresses at the big events are on the most basic level very attractive. Of course they have experience but it is now very commonplace when hosting an event to leverage sponsorship from a company who will provide attractive models to waitress in company clothing

I think it is about anticipating the customer... putting oneself into the customer's seat... and thinking ahead of them. Empty bread plate might just mean they would like another roll. One plate fuller than the others at a table might just mean one customer is not too happy....check it out early...a good waiter may be able to retrieve the situation.

It all comes down to one word – DEDICATION

If you are a dedicated server then everything else will follow.

Being a top class waiter or waitress can sometimes by overlooked but you can bet that if you are truly dedicated to the job you will be highly prized,

Invest time in education (remember that knowing about food, ingredients and accompaniments is as important as other aspects of the job), care about your customer and never lower your standards and you will be a superb waiter or waitress.

Hi Juliana,

Janet from Silent Customer here ;-) I was discussing this with some freinds only the other day. For me a good 'waitron' as I like to call us. Is some one that 'loves' people. Liking is not enough.
