A bunch of celebrities recently announced that they’re planning to launch restaurants.

There's Jack Tweed, widower to the late Jade Goody, who plans to launch a "posh restaurant in Essex" in her honour; Heather Mills, who recently announced her forthcoming vegan restaurant in Brighton; and X Factor presenter Dermot O'Leary, who together with two mates will open Fishy Fishy in Brighton in June.

Last but not least, Danielle Bux, girlfriend to Gary Lineker and Hell’s Kitchen contestant, wants to open a pub together with her beau.

Why do celebrities think they can run restaurants? And is it just me or do all of the above sound like recipes for disaster?

It's not just you - they do sound like recipes for disaster. It's all about ego. Most celebs have huge egos, and therefore think they are capable of anything. It's their Achilles heel.

"Most celebs have huge egos"

Unlike the top chefs of course.....

I agree with Mark, it's all about ego. They deserve to fail just to be brought back to reality.

What I think is interesting as well is that so many celebrities are really ignorant about food. I came across aninterview with Nick Munier from Hell's Kitchen on Caterersearch who said of the celebrity guests on the show: "Some of them just hadn't a clue about food. You'd think that being celebrities they'd be accustomed to eating in fine-dining restaurants, but a lot of them were really uneducated, which to me was a real eye-opener."

Of course it's all about ego.

It also seems that having your name attached to a restaurant is a nice fashionable accessory for our celebs, from A listers to Z listers (is Jack Tweed really a celebrity?). It goes well with their diamond earings, chains and rings. It's another line they can add when talking to their pal's over a bbq...'oh, by the way, have I mentioned I own a restaurant too?'

Unfortunately, I also feel they think it is an easy thing to do. Either that, or some smart person is using their image (and maybe their spare coin) to make themselves a quick buck or 2.
