Former Man Behind the Curtain head chef Kray Treadwell to open Birmingham restaurant

Kray Treadwell, formerly head chef at Michael O'Hare's Michelin-starred the Man Behind the Curtain restaurant, is opening his own restaurant in Birmingham.

670 Grams will have 16 covers and is set to open in the city's Digbeth area in the Custard Factory building.

Named after the weight of his daughter when she was born four months prematurely, Treadwell hopes the restaurant will open mid-June, depending on the situation in the UK with regards to coronavirus.

Speaking to The Caterer, he said it will be a restaurant "for the younger generation" with a good value menu and a casual environment.

The restaurant will offer a £55 10-course fine dining tasting menu, which he described as small plates with a mix of modern European influences and Asian-inspired flavours. It will also feature some aspects inspired by takeaway food, such as a share and tear onion bread dish inspired by a cheese and onion sandwich from Tesco.

The peach dessert that saw him through to the finals of BBC Two's Great British Menu will also appear on the regularly-changing menu. Treadwell will be the only chef in the open kitchen upstairs, facing onto a two-person chef's table and one table of four, with the remaining covers downstairs.

"I've wanted a restaurant since I was 16 years' old. I've planned for this for the last 12 years," said Treadwell. "There's no stuffiness, no pretentiousness, and having it in that part of town really fits what I'm trying to do."
