Uber to launch UberEATS food delivery service in the UK

App-based transportation service Uber hopes to launch its UberEATS food delivery service here in the UK.

Originally a cashless taxi request app, Uber has since expanded to offer on-demand delivery service UberRUSH, business travel and restaurant takeaway service UberEATS. The service is currently available in 16 cities, primarily in the US, and offers delivery from local restaurants to homes and workplaces. The service is similar to Deliveroo, an online delivery service that allows customers to order in from restaurants in their area, which is already operating in the UK.

The news comes not long after Deliveroo announced it had signed a deal with PizzaExpress.

Uber is currently advertising for an "operations and launch" UberEATS restaurant partnerships manager in London to "get the city's best restaurants interested in UberEATS".

According to a report on Buzzfeed News, it is also recruiting a team of bicycle and scooter drivers, offering a £100 early sign-up bonus to those who agree to join UberEATS ahead of an expected official launch.

An Uber spokesperson said: "UberEATS has been hugely popular in every city around the world we have launched it in, so the fact we are exploring the UK market shouldn't come as a surprise. We're always looking at what other services we can bring to the market here."

Uber has not set a date for when it will launch UberEATS in the UK and could not confirm whether it would be rolling out in London or any other UK cities, or comment on how it would differentiate from similar services.
