Camra calls for communities to fight local pub closures(14 February 2007 10:15)New figures from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) have revealed that community pubs are closing at an unprecedented rate. The research, which coincides with Camra’s Community Pubs Week (17 – 24 February) found that 56 pubs a month are closed permanently – 80% of which are in urban locations. It said that more than 1,300 pubs nationwide are currently under threat from closure. The figures have prompted Camra to call for communities to rally behind their local pub. Chief executive Mike Benner said: “Across the UK currently, a sword hangs over more than 1,300 pubs and falls on an average of 56 a month, depriving communities of a vital hub forever.” Article continues below
Camra is now campaigning for pubs to be placed in a separate ‘Use Class’ to other retail businesses to help close the legal loophole allowing developers to demolish pubs without planning permission.
