Soho restaurant Polpo to launch basement bar
London restaurant Polpo is set to open a bar on the lower ground floor of its Soho site.
The Polpo Cicheti Bar, which will open on 8 February, will serve drinks and a menu of light snacks, including traditional Venetian bacari of artichokes with prosciutto, chilli marinated baby octopus and mortadella wrap with gorgonzola and walnuts.
Design features will include a rustic, zinc-topped bar with standing room only, exposed brickwork walls, communal wooden tables and ceramic light fittings.
Co-owner Russell Norman commented: "Opening a cicheti bar underneath the main dining room allows us to get back to the inspiration behind Polpo: quick snacks and small glasses of wine in an informal setting."
Polpo, which launched in autumn 2009 to huge critical acclaim, was awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin for serving great food at moderate prices.
The restuarant is co-owned by former Caprice Holdings operations director Norman and business partner Richard Beatty, who last year opened nearby sister restaurant Polpetto and plan to launch a third site Spuntino this year.
